What’s New
Our Experience

We started Functional Neurosurgical Program at Jaslok Hospital & Research Centre in 1998. Initially Movement Disorder surgery was the main area of interest. We had started with lesioning procedure and later on progressed to Deep Brain Stimulation. On 14th October, 1999 we performed the first Deep Brain Stimulation surgery ever by Indian doctors in India. Since then, we have been regularly performing lesioning and stimulation procedures as indicated in Parkinson's disease patients. The break-up of various surgeries is as follows :

We introduced Micro Electrode Recording in our surgical armamentarium in 2002. With introduction of MER technique our functional neurosurgical procedures are comparable with the best centres in the World. We have virtually been successful in all the cases that we have operated. The following are the silent features of our surgical program :

  • The Neurosurgical and Neurological team has been working together since the beginning of the program.
  • Careful selection of the patients prior to surgery so as to avoid operating on unindicated cases.
  • Use of state of the art technique and technology to achieve best possible results.
  • Detailed work-up, before and after surgery, and analysis of all the patients operated so as to help in further patient management.

Not only we have excelled in the number of surgeries that we have performed but we have been equally recognised by our peer group. We have virtually been invited in all the Movement Disorder Meetings nationally and internationally as guest faculty.

Dystonia

We have experience of operating cases of dystonia. Several cases have undergone Pallidotomy and 3 cases have undergone Deep Brain Stimulation. Several patients were primary generalised dystonia and several number of patients were secondary generalised dystonia. The results of dystonia surgery has been moderate. This is comparable to world literature. The pre and post surgical videos of dystonia patients can be access through our web site.

Tremors

We have experience of operating on all kinds of tremors with good results. The various indications for tremors surgery includes Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, essential tremor, rubral tremor, post stroke tremor etc. We have so far operated 23 cases for tremors, which includes 16 of lesional and 7 of stimulation surgeries. Once again our experience with tremors surgery tells us that certain tremors like severe proximal extremity tremor of multiple sclerosis or proximal component of essential tremors are difficult to treat and may require various alternative strategies to achieve best results. The videos of the patients undergoing tremor surgery can be access through videos of our web site.

During all the surgeries there has not been a single mortality and the morbidity and complication rates has been less than 1%.
